There is nothing quite like the feeling of unboxing a brand-new smartphone. But before you get too distracted by those shiny new camera lenses and that buttery-smooth screen, you have an important decision to make: what are you going to do with your old phone?
Leaving it to collect dust in a drawer is just throwing money away. Instead, trading it in or selling it is the smartest way to fund your upgrade.
At Cell City Mobiles, we love trade-ins. But we also see a lot of customers walk into our store who aren’t quite ready to hand over their devices. Sometimes they haven’t backed up their photos, or they are locked out of their iCloud accounts.
To make your exchange process as smooth, fast, and profitable as possible, here are 5 easy steps to prepare your phone for a trade-in.
Step 1: Back Up Your Data (Don’t Lose Your Memories!)
Before you even think about handing over your old phone, you need to make sure your digital life is safely backed up. Nobody wants to lose years of family photos, important work contacts, or their precious WhatsApp chats.
- For iPhone Users: Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup and tap “Back Up Now.”
- For Android Users: Go to Settings > Google > Backup and tap “Back up now.”
- Don’t Forget WhatsApp: WhatsApp does not always back up automatically with your phone. Open WhatsApp, go to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup, and manually tap the backup button to save your conversations to your Google Drive or iCloud.
Step 2: Sign Out of Your Accounts (Crucial Step)
This is the most common roadblock we see during trade-ins. Both Apple and Google have strict anti-theft locks (called Activation Lock for iOS and Factory Reset Protection for Android). If you reset your phone without signing out first, the phone will lock itself permanently, making it completely useless to the next buyer.
How to do it properly:
- Apple (iOS): Go to Settings, tap your name at the very top, scroll all the way to the bottom, and hit “Sign Out.” You will need your Apple ID password to turn off “Find My iPhone.”
- Samsung/Android: Go to Settings > Accounts and backup > Manage accounts. Tap on your Google account (and your Samsung account if you have one) and select “Remove account.”
Step 3: Perform a Factory Data Reset
Once your data is safe and your accounts are removed, it is time to wipe the slate clean. A factory reset deletes everything on the device—your photos, apps, saved passwords, and browsing history. It ensures your privacy is 100% protected before the phone leaves your hands.
- iPhone: Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.
- Android: Go to Settings > General Management (or System) > Reset > Factory Data Reset.
Pro Tip: Ensure your phone’s battery is at least 50% before starting the reset process, so it doesn’t die halfway through!
Step 4: Clean It Up & Gather the Accessories
Let’s be honest: a clean phone simply looks more valuable. Take a microfiber cloth and gently wipe away the fingerprints, dust, and pocket lint from the screen and charging port.
Next, hunt down the original items that came with the phone. While we accept “phone-only” trade-ins, bringing the original box, original charging brick, and data cable can significantly boost the valuation price we can offer you.
Step 5: Bring Your CNIC (The Legal Requirement)
In Pakistan, mobile phone shops are required to follow strict legal protocols to prevent the buying and selling of stolen property. We take this very seriously to protect our customers and our community.
Whenever you want to sell or exchange a phone at Cell City Mobiles, you must bring your original, valid CNIC (Computerized National Identity Card). We will take a copy of it for our records. This proves that you are the legal owner of the device and ensures a safe, transparent transaction for everyone involved. No CNIC, no trade-in—no exceptions!
